UCLA Essay II
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
The most important experience to me is practicing high-jump since grade 4. I learnt so much from high-jumping, such as how to get along with others, make friends, and gain confidence. Back to grade 4 I was just a shy kid who went on training reluctantly. But after making some friends in the team and conquering my first height, I found the sport interesting and was willing to attend training. I kept training and in one day’s afternoon, to my surprise, my coach asked me to attend a formal match. After I heard the information, I was so motivated that I told myself to try my best and devote more time to practice. Time went by so fast and finally the match day came.
It was a May morning in 2010 when the Shanghai Youth Track and Field Tournament took place. The moment I left home for the tournament, I thought I was very well prepared. I held my head erect and back straight, and wore a confident smile, being sure that I could win a good prize in the high jump competition. For me it was a very important event and I longed to prove myself really eagerly. However, I was so stressed that I failed to perform my talents and skills well. Tears were about to burst out when the tube fell down and I knew I ruined it. People who haven’t been athletes would never understand this kind of bitter and miserable feeling. We gave up so many things and struggled to fight for our goals and dreams. On the way back home, I couldn't help thinking about the way I had come through, but I managed to calm down. I thought about giving up, but one voice in my heart kept asking me “Is that over? Is that what you want?” Suddenly the feeling of jumping over the tube came to my mind, making me realize the beauty of high-jumping: “Is it not the conquest of every brand new height I’m always pursuing?” I felt ashamed of my previous thought to quit and roared to myself: “Don’t let such a little thing defeat you!”I figured out that it was my interest in high jumping that led me to develop my view of life, and that I should not lose any of my confidence even if I was so upset, because I was sure that I would fight back.
From that day on, although sometimes practice reminds me of that failure, I am determined to take every challenge and I enjoy the process indeed. I found the process was far more precious than the result because it was from the journey that I learnt much.I stayed behind after the training was over to do more practices. Every time the tube fell down, I would try it again. The efforts I made finally let me win the third prize in 2011’s Shanghai High School Field and Track Tournament. Thanks to the almost 10 years’ high-jump experience, I’m not afraid of challenges and failures, and I’ll never give up easily, both in my study and life.
